Wrestlers at Rocky Heights go undefeated
Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) is home to champion wrestlers. This year’s team made school history by going undefeated and winning the Douglas County School District’s (DCSD) middle school tournament. District competitions are the highest-level of wrestling tournaments within DCSD.
Eighth-grader Mason Enquist won first place in his weight class every year of middle school. As part of the 98-pound weight class, Mason will finish middle school with a 30-2 record overall.
“After I won last year, I set my goal to win for a third year in a row. I wasn’t sure if anyone had done that at Rocky Heights, so I wanted to do it,” Mason said. “I felt like my brackets got tougher every year with more experienced wrestlers, so I was really happy to win again.”
Ten years ago, when RHMS started a wrestling program, only about a dozen students participated. They lost every duel and finished dead last in the district rankings.
Today, the program flourishes, in big part to coaches and twin brothers Patric and Darryl McGowan. Team participant numbers have quadrupled and RHMS has “become one of the best teams in the district,” explained Coach Darryl.
The wrestling season runs from late October to early December each year. With 16 different weight classes, there is a place for any student who is interested in participating.
