A good teacher knows that good learning experiences can be found just about anywhere if you know where to look. The “ice bucket” challenge for ALS research was just such a learning opportunity. Timber Trail Elementary (TTE) fifth grader Helmsley Farmer got inspired to do the challenge by a work colleague of her dad, Dave. When she “took the plunge,” she challenged her fifth grade teacher, Mandy Smith to join in the fun.

“I think this was a good idea to raise money for ALS research, and it was also fun to watch,” said Helmsley. “I challenged Ms. Smith, and she gave me the idea to challenge the entire staff. I think students here really loved it.”

And so last month, clad in clothing suitable for soaking, most of the faculty gathered on the school’s east lawn and, one by one, dumped a bucket of water on their heads.

“After Helmsley challenged me, I encouraged her to challenge the whole staff because I wanted her idea to make a bigger difference,” said Smith. “I think it is important for kids to see that they can make a difference in their community and inspire others to do something for their cause. Plus, nothing refreshes your outlook quite like a bucket of ice water to the head!” To learn more about ALS, visit www.ALSA.org.
