The Timber Trail Education Alliance (TTEA), the PTA at Timber Trail Elementary School, has partnered with the Downtown Aquarium for this year’s literacy program called “Dive Into Reading.”
The eight-week program is a competition of sorts; students log the time they’ve spent reading and turn logs in for chances to win various prizes – including a chance for top readers to go on a guided dive at the Aquarium.
“We are encouraging reading for fun,” said the program’s co-chair, TTEA member Angel Spangenberger. Spangenberger’s co-chair, Tiffany Dexter added, “What kid doesn’t want a dive in the Aquarium?”
The Downtown Aquarium developed a special presentation specifically for Timber Trail students to launch the program and get students excited about reading every day.
“We dive every day at the Aquarium,” said the Downtown Aquarium’s co-manager of education, Alyce Todd. “This was such a natural fit for us and I knew we could find ways to capture students’ attention.”
Todd donned full SCUBA gear and told them to DIVE (discover, investigate, venture, entertain) each time they open a book.
