The Food Lab: Fresh lemonade by the glass

Article and photos by Lisa Crockett

Make a simple syrup:

Bring one cup of water to a boil in a small saucepan on the stove. As soon as the water boils, add one cup of granulated sugar and stir continuously until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is bubbling. Turn off the heat and allow the mixture to cool completely.

Make the lemonade:
In a tall glass (at least 12 ounce capacity), combine ¼ cup of the simple syrup, the juice of one lemon (3-4 tablespoons), ¾ cup of cold water and plenty of ice. Garnish with fresh lemon slices.

Add extras:
For something extra special, add chopped or mashed strawberries or raspberries to the lemonade for extra flavor and color.
