The calling to teach came early
A career calling can come at any age. Sarah Sexton remembers the time she first felt the tug, sitting in her elementary school classroom. Sarah said, “I think I have known I have wanted to be a teacher since about second grade. I’ve always loved school!”
That calling took hold; this year, she will have wrapped up 20 years in the classroom.
Leading and encouraging youngsters is something that runs deep in Sarah’s family. Sarah’s mom taught kindergarten, her dad was a high school counselor and today, her daughter teaches kindergarten.
Sarah loves young minds the most. When her kids were little, she taught pre-kindergarten at St. Andrew United Methodist Church and then was an educational assistant and first grade teacher at Northridge Elementary School where her kids attended school. “I have been a third grade teacher at Heritage Elementary School for 16 years. I clearly love third graders!” said Sarah.
What makes them so special, the little ones? She said they are honest, funny and engaging. “I love to develop relationships with my students and families. I love having long-term relationships with kids. One of my favorite things is having older kids (middle school or high school) who come back and visit me,” Sarah shared.
Sarah and her husband, Jeff, have been married for 33 years. She grew up in San Francisco, but they have called Colorado home for the past 28 years. She has two adult children, Katie and Matt, who both attended Douglas County schools – graduating from Mountain Vista High School.
Sarah said both of her kids had great experiences in local schools and she is thankful to have the opportunity to give back to the same district that gave so much to her children.
Sarah loves reading, taking long walks and soaking in the Colorado beauty on her hikes. She and Jeff have two cats and a dog, all of which she says are beyond spoiled.
