Shaping wrestlers on and off the mat

In the halls of Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) and Rock Canyon High School (RCHS), twins Darryl and Patric McGowan are known for more than their wrestling expertise—they have become trusted mentors who help students grow as athletes and individuals.

The McGowans’ journey began ten years ago when Darryl’s son joined the RHMS wrestling team. Darryl became a coach and Patric soon joined him, and the twins’ shared passion for wrestling and teaching blossomed into a collaborative coaching effort.

And for the 2024 season, it paid off. The RHMS wrestling team won the district championship. (See related article on page 36).

“Coaching as twins is awesome,” shared Darryl. “We both work together like a left and right hand, and although we may appear identical, we think very differently and split up the coaching tasks. There is no way either one of us could handle this without the other.”

“Patric and I have a passion for teaching and training children to be the best they can be,” said Darryl. “We want them to find and develop their own passions, build a hard work ethic and to fearlessly face and overcome challenges.”

The McGowans wish more families understood the unique benefits of wrestling. “Wrestling isn’t just for big or fast kids,” Darryl explained. “It’s for anyone willing to work hard. There’s no teammate to pass the ball to––it’s all on you. That’s what makes it so transformative.”

“The coaches help us understand technique by demonstrating moves to us as a group and also work with us one on one,” said freshman teammate Griffin Seager. “They care about us as a team and individuals. Their leadership is kind and gentle but also impactful.”

The twins’ approach stems from their experience as young wrestlers at West Middle School, Cherry Creek High School and Stanford University. “No other sport pushes kids like wrestling,” Patric added. “It is a trial by fire that teaches perseverance, grit and courage—qualities you need for success in life.”

The brothers’ bond extends beyond the mat, with the entire family invested in the program. “Our parents were involved in everything we did growing up, and we’ve carried that forward,” said Darryl. “Our mom is a team manager and our dad helps with admissions and concessions. My wife runs the booster club.”

Patric’s wife, Jennifer, and their children, Alex (19) and Petra (17) are supportive of his coaching efforts.

Darryl and his wife, Natalie, are equally committed, with their son Jaden (21) and daughter Acelyn (20) cheering from afar.

The McGowan’s playful sibling rivalry also adds a dynamic edge to their teaching style. “When we demonstrate moves, we still love to test each other out,” Darryl joked. “It keeps things fun and engaging for the kids.”

“Wrestling demands discipline and heart,” concluded Patric. “It is tough, but the rewards are life-changing.”
