Scholarships available for teen crash avoidance class
A local teen was driving this vehicle on the 7300 block of Shoreham Drive in Castle Pines North last August when she lost control of the vehicle and rolled it. The teen crash avoidance skills classes are designed to better prepare teens for handling situations such as this.

The Teen Crash Avoidance Skills Class is a behind-the-wheel course which teaches crash avoidance techniques and is instruction is provided by off-duty law enforcement officers and firefighters. The foundation has been hosting this class since 1992. Scholarship funds have been provided by families having lost a loved one. You may also contact your local State Farm agent for a full scholarship.
The scholarship program is for teens in the permit phase of the learn-to–drive process and who have held their permit for at least two months. The foundation is offering a 50 percent scholarship to teens meeting these conditions.
The crash avoidance skills that are covered are similar to those taught to professional and public safety drivers. The class is offered at the fire training center in Parker.
Threshold Braking – braking at the threshold of lock up while avoiding a skid or spin.
Crash Avoidance – maintaining control of the vehicle while maneuvering out of harm’s way.
Skid Control and Recovery – maneuvering and braking on icy, snowy or slippery surfaces and recovery from a skid or spin.
Off-Road Recovery – teaching car control techniques when uneven road surfaces are encountered.
Defensive Driving – encouraging the consistent use of defensive techniques such as “hand-to-hand feed and aim-high vision techniques, proper braking, as well as stressing the critical importance of proper hand positioning for quick reaction and controlled steering.
Backing – proper backing skills.
