The story of “High School Musical” revolves around a star basketball player and a math genius who share a secret love for performing, but struggle with breaking out of their designated roles. This story came to life at Rocky Heights Middle School as 125 kids came together to tell this story of breaking free from stereotypes.

The musical involved several numbers where the entire cast was on stage, and the smiles on the faces of these young performers and their energy and excitement were a pleasure to witness.

The play showcased the musical talents of several students, including eighth grade student Jamie Zurzolo who played the female lead, Gabriella. “I looked forward to all the rehearsals,” remarked Zurzolo. “That’s what got me through school everyday with a smile on my face! And I loved at the end of the show, when everyone was clapping and we knew we had done another great show!”

The play was directed by drama teacher Maclain Looper, and music teacher Susie Ritter oversaw the musical performances. Looper remarked, “There are a lot of things I really enjoyed about directing High School Musical. But what it all comes down to is that I just love the kids. They drive me crazy sometimes, but when they get an audience in front of them and suddenly the show comes alive … it’s overwhelming. How do you put into words seeing 125 kids come together to create something amazing? I guess that’s the power of theatre.”
