Nearly 2 million high school students take the ACT each year, and on average less than one-tenth of one percent earn the top score – an ACT Composite score of 36. Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) junior and Castle Pines Village resident Olivia Voss earned the highest possible score on her first time taking the test.
The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science, and scores are accepted by all major U.S. colleges. Voss said, “The reading portion of the test was harder than the other areas for me because I get too involved with subtext instead of just choosing the obvious answer.”
Voss found out about her top score while at school and immediately called her mom. Voss said, “We were both crying. The other students were looking at me funny.” At RCHS, Voss is president of the Amnesty International club, vice president of Model United Nations, in Science Olympiads, French National Honor Society, and the Bollywood Dance Club.
Voss said her favorite subjects in high school have been AP U.S. History and AP World History and she is planning on studying international affairs and politics in college and then going on to law school. Top colleges on Voss’s list are the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke and the University of California San Diego.
In a letter from the ACT chief executive officer recognizing this exceptional achievement, the CEO stated, “Your achievement on the ACT is significant and rare. While test scores are just one of multiple criteria that most colleges consider when making admission decisions, your exceptional ACT Composite score should prove helpful as you pursue your education and career goals.” Congratulations Olivia!
