The Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) lacrosse team wrapped up its season on May 13 with a team banquet in the school’s common area. Coach Louis Goldin led this year’s team which had nine First Team Academic All State players and two Honorable Mention Academic All State players. In addition, the RCHS team had five players make first or second Team All Conference, four of which were new to the list.
“It is truly astounding how much these young men grew this year,” Goldin commented. The team had some big victories, including beating Douglas County High School for the first time and beating Smoky Hill twice. Goldin stated, “We as coaches, are extremely proud of the varsity squad and the odds and obstacles we were able to overcome this year.”
Lacrosse, known as the fastest sport on two feet, is the only sport at Rock Canyon that plays at the 5a level. As parent, Deanna Merrill commented, “The school is 4a so all other sports go to playoffs with similar sized schools. However, lacrosse is played with all schools competing with each other from Regis and Arapahoe to Rock Canyon.”
In mid-February when the teams were chosen they set goals, one of which was making the playoffs. While in previous years the team dyed their hair blonde or got Mohawks when achieving this goal, this year’s team decided they would all get mullet haircuts to help fuel their energy.
The team did make it to the playoffs, and yes, they were donning their new mullet cuts. They lost in the first round against Monarch.
As Goldin stated, “We are very excited as we look to next year. We all agree that the future of the varsity lacrosse squad looks bright at Rock Canyon because we were a young squad with talent.” At the banquet, Goldin also thanked the team members, “who gave and sacrificed for the team, which really contributed to all of our successes this season.”
