Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) is very proud of aspiring young artist, Kirsten Lumsden, who won first place in the Sixth Congressional District’s High School Art Competition last month.

Lumsden, a Junior at RCHS and resident of Noble Ridge, made a wonderful pastel creation entitled “Great Sand Dunes.” Lumsden received a $200 award, a framed certificate of Congressional recognition, two plane tickets to Washington D.C. for a reception this summer and a $1500 per year scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia.

In addition, her piece will be on display at the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. from June 2010 through April 2011.

Lumsden developed a passion for drawing and painting at an early age and has taken art classes every year at RCHS. She visited the Great Sand Dunes National Park several years ago with her family and was inspired to use the image for her pastel. Lumsden says, “The Great Sand Dunes represent Colorado’s natural beauty.” The talented young Lumsden also submitted two photos for the photography competition at the Douglas County Fair and won awards for both photos.

Lumsden has applied to attend a five week college credit summer program with Savannah College of Art & Design to try it out and see whether or not she
would like to pursue art as a major.

Congratulations to Lumsden for her impressive, artistic accomplishments!
