Public Works in Action

by Lisa Crockett

Douglas County residents received a newsletter this summer entitled Douglas County Connection, which reports funding sources and expenditures on road projects from 1996 to 2006. The newsletter details road and bridge funding, road sales and use tax, as well as other quality of life issues relating to roads in Douglas County.

The newsletter also provides extensive detail on Douglas County’s Capital Improvements Program, largely funded through the 4/10ths of one cent Road Sales and Use Tax voted in by citizens in 1995. This sales tax is set to expire in 2010 unless reauthorized by voters.

Douglas County estimates savings of more than $14 million in construction and bond interest costs as a result of the citizens’ support of this tax.

To review the newsletter in its entirety, go to www.douglas.co.us/publicworks/ and click on Public Works “In Motion” under “What’s New/Hot Topics.” To provide input on the newsletter or for additional information, call 303-660-7490.
