Proposed Walgreens Encounters Construction Delays

by Lisa Crockett

Despite several delays in recent months, the construction of a new Walgreens store on the north side of Castle Pines Parkway at Lagae Road is still in the works, though its arrival will be several months – possibly more than a year — later than planned. The County required the developer, Anxon, Inc., to obtain easements from neighboring landowners for various features of the development, and getting the paperwork completed has proved to be more time consuming than anticipated.

“This is merely a delay,” said Max Heitzmann, Vice President at Anxon, Inc. “This is not a change in plans of any sort.”

After several postponements of a required hearing before the County Planning Commission, Douglas County planning staff is now requiring that new public meeting notices be posted on the property. The date of this hearing is currently unknown.

“This store is still in our plans,” said Carol Hively, a spokesperson for Walgreens Corporation. “We haven’t signed a lease yet, however, so we can’t give a tentative opening date at this time.”

Once the development is approved by the County Planning Commission, the developer must make a final presentation to the County Commissioners. In its initial phases, this project was set to be finished in late 2006 or early 2007. The revised timeline of the project is unknown.
