Open enrollment for Affordable Care Act insurance

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) 2021 open enrollment period for purchasing health insurance for the coming year began November 1 and runs through December 15. Castle Pines community residents and small business owners can find the 2021 available health insurance plans through the nonprofit health insurance marketplace for Coloradans – Connect for Health Colorado.
Those seeking health insurance coverage can shop online to compare and contrast multiple health insurance companies offering plans that include essential benefits and protections through the marketplace. Users can view premiums as well as see an estimated yearly cost for each health insurance plan. Additionally, the website offers filters that can determine if a particular insurance plan covers a specific medication, doctor or facility.
The ACA offers financial assistance for those individuals and families who qualify. Part of the application process factors in annual income, and based on household size and earnings, financial help may be available. Those that don’t qualify for assistance are still eligible to purchase a healthcare plan at full cost.
Coloradans are welcome to log into the system and purchase a plan on their own. The website offers statewide customer support, as well as licensed brokers for those who would like assistance filling out the forms and comparing plans.
This open enrollment period is the only time health insurance plans are available for the coming year. After December 15, the only way health insurance can be purchased is during a special enrollment period within 60 days following what is called a qualifying life changing event. Qualifying life changing events can be family additions or changes like having a baby, getting married, or a death of a household member. Loss of health insurance coverage due to a job loss or change will also qualify. Children who turn 26 and age off their parents’ plan can also apply for a special enrollment period. A permanent address change or changes to income can also qualify.
