NFL star’s jersey retired at Valor

In April, Valor Christian High School (Valor) proudly welcomed home NFL star and alumnus Christian McCaffrey for a special ceremony to retire his high school jersey, number 5. Currently a running back for the San Francisco 49ers, Christian returned to his alma mater alongside his wife, Olivia, and his parents Lisa and Ed. The event was attended by current students, alumni football players who were Christian’s peers, former coaches, faculty and administration.
“Watching Christian’s high school jersey get retired was a powerful, full-circle moment—one that reminded me of all the grit, sacrifice, and discipline he’s poured into this game from the very beginning,” said Olivia on Instagram.
Widely regarded as one of the most dynamic players in professional football today, Christian’s roots trace back to his standout years at Valor, where he left a legacy as a student athlete, including being named Gatorade Player of the Year for 2012 and 2013, and setting multiple Colorado high school records for career touchdowns (141), career touchdown receptions (47), season all-purpose yards (3,032) and career all-purpose yards (8,845).
As for his advice for current and future high school students, “Thank God for every day, work as hard as you can, be nice to people and have fun,” said Christian to Valor student journalist Kyle Williams. “Life will get complicated, and you’ll go through adversity and some hardships, but if you can continue to push and follow your dreams and not really worry necessarily about how you’re feeling but the job that needs to get done, you’ll always be able to look yourself in the mirror and know you gave it everything you’ve got.”
Christian grew up in The Village at Castle Pines and graduated from Valor in 2014.
