New name; same mission

After 115 years as the Dumb Friends League, the Denver-based animal welfare organization has re-branded itself as Humane Colorado. The original name, inspired by London’s 1897 charity Our Dumb Friends League, used “dumb” to mean “mute” or “lacking speech,” referring to animals.

The new name, Humane Colorado, reflects the organization’s commitment to advocacy, education, and compassionate care for animals, their caregivers, and the communities they serve.

“This evolution is a natural step forward for our organization, reflecting continued dedication to improving the welfare of animals in our state and across the country,” stated Humane Colorado President and CEO, Dr. Apryl Steele.

Despite the name change, Humane Colorado’s mission to end pet homelessness and animal suffering remains steadfast. The organization continues to offer a range of services, including adoption programs for dogs, cats, and horses; shelter and veterinary services; spay and neuter services; public education initiatives; and youth camps.
