New judicial district in place for Douglas County
Due to the continuing increase in population in Douglas County and throughout the Denver metro area, House Bill 20-1026 was passed in 2020 to create a new judicial district: the 23rd Judicial District, which includes Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties. The 23rd district is the first new district in more than 60 years, and it became effective on January 7, 2025.
The former 18th Judicial District consisted of Arapahoe, Douglas, Lincoln and Elbert Counties and served more than one million people. Arapahoe County is now the only county in the 18th Judicial District. Even though the new 23rd district is smaller by one county, it is still one of the five largest judicial districts in the state.
With the new district in place, Colorado District Attorney George Brauchler, eleced last November, was sworn in on January 14. (See article here). For additional information about the new judicial district, visit coda23.gov.
