During the assembly Good Witches from the North and Bad Witches form the West cast spells to come up with the correct spelling of words in the game show “Cast Your Spell.” The assembly was held to impress the importance of spelling to the students as well as motivate them to learn the words for the Spelling Challenge contest held at the end of the month.

The month of April was filled with literacy at Buffalo Ridge Elementary School (BRE) and was served with a side of fundraising. In its second year, literacy month at BRE is designed to promote reading throughout the school and does so with a fundraising twist.
The month kicked off with an all school assembly that showcased one of the month’s fundraising activities, The Spelling Challenge. BRE teachers performed at the assembly, crafted by Buffalo Ridge Education Alliance (BREA) parents, and had the students excited to take his or her spelling words home to learn and raise money for the teacher’s classrooms in the 2010-2011 school year. More than $7,000 was raised through pledges. The money will divide between the teachers for classroom start-up funds in the upcoming school year.
April also found the school’s library transformed into a bookstore with the Scholastic Spring Book Fair. Students, parents and teachers were able to shop the fair and find great deals on books for reading throughout the summer. The school’s library raised more than $3,000 in cash that will be used in the coming year as well as another $2,200 in books from Scholastic.
The students also had the opportunity to participate in the final reading incentive program. Students kept track of the number of hours read during the contest and were rewarded with a free ticket to the home opening game for the Denver Outlaws Lacrosse game held May 22 at INVESCO Field. The students took part in a pre-game parade around the field in recognition for their reading efforts.
