How to make summer reading effective

Information provided by the National Summer Learning Association

The ABCs of Improved Reading

Access to books.  It is critical that kids have access to a wide variety of books over the summer months. If kids are learning to read, read with them.

Books should match the reader’s ability level and interest. For young people to improve their reading skills, they need to read books that align with their own reading level.  Reading books that are too easy or too hard does not help them.

Comprehension is very important.  The most important piece to making summer reading effective is the help of an adult who can ask questions and guide kids to better understand what they are reading.
