Helpful loaners for seniors

As the population ages, budgets can be tighter and the need to count dollars can become more crucial as we work to thrive on fixed incomes. That is one reason it is so important to be aware of and take advantage of the generous resources available in our community, especially for seniors.

Aging Resources of Douglas County (ARDC) is one of those nonprofits ready and willing to help. One of its offerings is a loaner closet—a closet of items seniors can borrow for free when they need the items the most. The closet is filled with gently-used medical supplies and safety equipment, like canes, walkers, shower chairs and crutches. All items are donated by the goodness of neighbors.

Kelsey Thiessen, director of operations at ARDC, explained, “Often times, injuries from falls or changes in mobility come quickly and lead to times of high stress, especially if you are on a limited income. We want this program to help those in need of equipment quickly.”

“We hear stories all the time about insurance denying safety materials post-surgery and that’s heartbreaking,” continued Kelsey. “Many times, older adults who cannot afford to purchase those materials outright, end up going without it, which could lead to additional falls.”

When the items are no longer needed, they are given back to the closet. The next person will be grateful.

To get a loan from ARDC’s closet, or to donate any items, call 303-814-4300. Staff will check inventory and schedule a time for pickup of loaner equipment or drop off of items to donate. For more information, visit agingresourcesdouglascounty.org.
