Health, happiness and lacrosse

Delaney Stafford is excited about all the incredible things 2025 will usher in. The high school senior plans to cherish every day she has left with her classmates and friends at Valor Christian High School (VCHS)—especially her remaining time on the lacrosse team. The Ventana neighbor has much to celebrate, overcoming cancer as a child, and being accepted to play lacrosse at the next level.

“I love playing lacrosse! It gives me something to work at and express myself,” said Delaney. Making cherished friendships has been an added bonus, she continued. “We go through everything together, and I know they always have my back. We win together and lose together.”

Delaney fell in love with lacrosse in fifth grade and has never looked back. Her talent and commitment first gained attention from the high school and club teams, and then resulted in an invitation to play for the University of Louisville, a D1 school in Kentucky, which she accepted.

A defender on the field, Delaney is a three-time American Select Lacrosse player for Colorado.

For Delaney, learning to push through adversity was a life lesson that came early. At 6 years old, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She underwent treatment for two and half years. It did not require surgery, but she did need a port in her chest and went through rounds of chemotherapy.

“This was very difficult and took a big toll on my small body,” shared Delaney. She credits her church surrounding her family with love and support. “Looking back, I realize that the only way I made it through was with Christ. He truly was with me the entire time and has a perfect plan for my life.”

Delaney considers her health and happiness today a true miracle and said that it has made her thankful for every day in her lifetime. “Whenever I feel like I do not want to practice, I just remind myself how lucky I am to be able to practice,” said Delaney.

She is optimistic about the future and has words of wisdom for others.

“To girls who are just now starting or have the desire to play in college, I say do not let anyone tell you cannot do something,” Delaney concluded. “There will be lots of roadblocks, but with hard work you can get through anything.”
