Heads up, phones down!

Starting January 1, there is a new law in effect in Colorado banning the use of mobile electronic devices (such as cell phones) while driving. This applies not only to texting, but also to voice calls, GPS and other apps. Instead, all drivers must use a hands-free accessory if they want to access their electronics while on the road.

Acceptable accessories include dashboard phone mounts, Bluetooth accessories, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and built-in car speaker systems. All handling of cell phones or other devices, such as to start GPS directions or initiate a call, must be done before entering the roadway. Drivers cannot touch their phones while stopped at a stoplight or in a traffic jam. There is an exception for reporting an emergency.

The purpose of the law is to reduce distracted driving. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, studies show that using a mobile device while driving increases the risk of a crash by two to six times. Further, distracted drivers pose a particularly high risk to pedestrians and bicyclists. Visit codot.gov and search “phone” for more information.
