Good citizen recognized and rewarded

Stonecroft resident and Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) senior Azile Nelson was honored at the February 13 meeting of the Castle Rock Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Nelson and another young lady from Douglas County High School were awarded the DAR Good Citizens award.
Nelson was selected by RCHS as their representative based upon her dependability and honesty, service at home and in school and in the community, leadership, and patriotism. The candidates completed a proctored essay, provided grade transcripts, submitted recommendations, and described how they manifested the qualities of a good citizen.
A panel of three volunteer judges comprised of historical document archivists Blake Graham, Adam Speirs from the Philip S. Miller Library, and educator Rodney Cole, chose which candidates to recognize. Nelson’s impressive resume of yearbook editor, AP classes, honor roll, church involvement, and performing community service in Haiti stood out as exceptional.
Nelson received a Good Citizen certificate and lapel pin, a chapter check for $50, as well as a backpack filled with school supplies and a few extras.
Nelson remarked, “In order to be a DAR you must have an ancestor that was here during the Revolutionary War. My ancestor was in the first battle at Lexington and Concord. I am grateful for this acknowledgment.”
