Garden-fresh produce abound at local farmers markets

By Patte Smith

Farmers markets continue to grow in popularity as consumers’ interest in farm fresh produce grown locally has significantly increased.  Both consumers and farmers have found that they enjoy the opportunity to get to know each other throughout the growing season – it is a win-win for both the shopper and the grower.

Here is a list of weekend farmers markets not far from the Castle Pines area, and a few of the more popular ones in the Denver-Metro area.  For a complete list of 2015 Colorado farmers market locations (many during the weekday) throughout the state, visit www.colorado.gov/pacific/sites/default/files/Colorado%20Farmers%27%20Markets.pdf.

To better connect farmers and buyers, and to enhance awareness of available local food sources, the USDA has created three new local food directories for community-supported agriculture operations, food hubs, and on-farm markets by building on the popular and comprehensive National Farmers Market Directory.  This is a valuable resource for consumers throughout the United States – www.usdalocalfooddirectories.com/listings.html.
