First timers to state for RHMS

Article and photo submitted by Amy Shanahan

The Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) MATHCOUNTS team, coached by eighth grade math teacher Chris Gowing, participated in the regional MATHCOUNTS competition on Saturday, February 12th. There were approximately forty schools that participated, including the RHMS team of ten kids.

MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement. The MATHCOUNTS competition program allows students to push themselves to achieve more in mathematics. Consisting of fun and creative problems that promote critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, the MATHCOUNTS competitions have written and oral rounds, as well as individual and team components.

While all the students performed wonderfully, eighth grader Drew Holthaus (pictured above with coach Gowing) placed ninth overall in the competition. Holthaus will be advancing to the state level, along with team members Jessie Dobler, Daniel Gowing, and Jiwoo Park. This will be the first time that any student from RHMS will participate at the state level.

Gowing says, “I am extremely pleased with the students’ performance this year. Not just of those making it to the state competition, but of all the competitors. They really worked hard and it showed!”
