Dumb Friends League turns 700 years old

Who would have guessed that a kitten named Queenie would be the first of more than 2 million animals helped by the Dumb Friends League? One hundred years ago (700 dog years), Queenie was found in a basket at the home of Margaret Bradey, one of the women founders of the Dumb Friends League. These founders, led by Mrs. Jean Milne Gower, set the vision for how the Dumb Friends League would help millions of people and pets for years to come.
To commemorate its centennial, the Dumb Friends League invited special friends, volunteers and staff to attend the official launch of its 100-year celebration today at the League’s Quebec St. shelter in Denver. Throughout 2010, the League will be hosting several centennial themed events, including the Furry Scurry in May, CatFest in July and birthday parties for patrons, staff and volunteers in September.
Cats and dogs at the Dumb Friends League also took part in the celebration, enjoying special birthday treats – “pup” cakes for the dogs and tuna-flavored treats for the kitties, courtesy of Cosmo’s Dog Biscuit Bakery.
“We’re thrilled and blessed to be celebrating our 100th birthday and the bond between pets and people,” said Robert Rohde, Dumb Friends League president and CEO. “Thanks to the continued support of our donors, board members, corporate sponsors, dedicated volunteers and staff, the Dumb Friends League has been able to help more than two million animals in the Denver community and beyond.”
Since the Dumb Friends League was incorporated in 1910, the organization continues to carry out its founders’ vision by providing humane care to needy and forsaken pets; helping sick, injured and abused animals; adopting pets to new homes; advocating for pet-friendly laws; and educating children and adults about the needs of companion animals.
“Throughout 2010, we are honoring our past, celebrating our present and embracing a future full of hope,” Rohde said. “Hope that the next hundred years sees a time when every pet resides in a loving home, every child understands the meaning of compassion and every community values the animal companions whose lives depend on us.”
