Douglas County property owners get some tax relief

Last year, Douglas County residential property owners faced a 50% property tax increase, the highest in the Denver metro area and the largest in state history.

The community spoke up, many appealed, and the Board of Douglas County Commissioners listened and helped at the local level.

In mid-July, many of us received a tax relief check, approximately $200, which is about 19% of Douglas County’s portion of each property owners tax bill (not your total property tax bill).

“We heard your serious concerns over your total tax burden from the 2023 survey, several live town hall meetings and during a Taxing Authorities Summit,” stated Commissioners Abe Laydon, George Teal and Lora Thomas in a letter accompanying the check.

A historic $37.8 million in tax relief checks were sent to property owners without cutting services while also investing in public safety, a number one ask from residents. The payment is not a tax credit, not intended to be income and comes from Douglas County property taxes already levied and collected.

It is advised to deposit your check as soon as possible; the deadline is the end of November. In December, uncashed checks will be credited toward the property taxes for 2025.
