Dear Mrs. A – April 2025

Dear Mrs. A.,

I’m working on napkin etiquette with my kids and would love a primer from you, please advise.

Dear Green Briar,

Well sure! Knowing how the napkin works is an essential part of table etiquette. And starting early is always good. My children are grown, but I know they can still hear me saying, “Clap, clap, put the napkin in your lap.” And that’s how it starts!

If you are dining out, unfold the napkin and place it in your lap first thing. But, if you’re dining in someone’s home or a dinner party, follow the host’s lead. A meal at a formal party begins when the host or hostess unfolds their napkin.  Buffet-style meals allow you to unfold your napkin when you start eating. Use the napkin to blot or pat, not wipe your mouth.

If you need to leave the table during the meal, do not put the napkin on the table, but in your chair. Place the napkin soiled side up.

At meal’s end, the napkin is loosely folded and placed to the left of the plate, soiled parts hidden. It is considered impolite to put a napkin on the plate.

Don’t blot lipstick on a cloth napkin or use it as a handkerchief. You can excuse yourself if you need to blow your nose or fix your lipstick. I’ve asked many a waiter for a paper napkin from the bar to fix lipstick.

Remember, proper table manners will help you make a great impression. I hope this helps!

Big Love,

Mrs. A.
