Cycling street smarts

Submitted by South Metro Fire Rescue

Bicycle safety begins with wearing a properly fitted helmet, but wearing a helmet will not prevent you from getting hit by a motor vehicle. You, the cyclist, are responsible for avoiding cars.

Ride with traffic on the right side of the road and cross intersections using crosswalks. Look both ways before crossing, especially roads as busy as Castle Pines Parkway, Monarch Boulevard, Daniels Park Road, or Happy Canyon Road.

A helmet will help you during a crash, but your neighbors at South Metro Fire Rescue Authority hope you’ll avoid the crash in the first place.

Bicycle safety also relies on vehicle and motorcycle drivers. When driving through residential areas, look for pedestrians and cyclists…and SLOW DOWN!
