Cozy, comfy socks sent a caring message

Seventh-grader Saketh Anoop and eighth-grader Xavier Vigil inventory socks as part of the “One Book, One District Sock Drive.”

The student council at Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) wanted to give back this holiday season. They organized a sock collection at their school for the “One Book, One District Sock Drive,” a contest put on by the Douglas County School District. The school that collected the most pairs of new socks would win a $500 gift of books for the school library.

The socks at RHMS piled up – collected through November 14 – and were boxed up and sent to the Denver Rescue Mission to warm the feet of those who could use a little something special.

Why give? Seventh-grade student Kylie Hovde said it simply, “It makes you feel good in your heart.” Student Zoe Hudson said, “Not only does it make the person you are giving to feel amazing, but a single act of charity can make YOU feel amazing. It’s a win – win!”

Slipping into a new pair of socks is kind of like wrapping your feet in a warm hug. “It is important to give to other people because they might be going through a lot and need something,” said student Gargi Nair. “Something little can go a long way.”

While RHMS did not win the $500 gift card, they did get something in return: Giving is a gift in itself.

The 1,831 pairs of socks they donated will cover a lot of cold and tired feet this winter season.
