Chihuahua on a chain

This Pet Pedigree brought to you by Lone Tree Veterinary Medical Center

Alexis the “Chihuahua on the Chain” relaxes after a long motorcycle ride with Randy Bowers.

Alexis may be a tiny tan Chihuahua, but she sure looks mighty with her link chain leash. Though her chain looks as though it could pull the heaviest of trucks, it is a costume chain that weighs nothing more than her walking leash. It is certainly an attention-getter!

Randy Bowers brought Alexis home when she was just a pup. Now 13 years old, the two are still having fun adventures on all of Randy’s motorized toys, from wave runners and water boats to his 1979, fully-customized Harley Davidson. Alexis has her own life jacket for the wave runner and, being the world’s smallest dog breed, she tucks easily and securely into the inside pocket of Randy’s motorcycle jacket.

The chain idea came from Randy’s earlier days as a bull rider, which he did for 21 years, as well as roping. During that time, there was a massive bucking bull named Chicken on a Chain in the rodeo circuit. The bull was given his name when he ran through roosters tied to chains and found himself entangled with one. Although Randy never had the opportunity to draw the bull, he liked his name so much that he tweaked it for Alexis: “Chihuahua on a Chain.” She is a neighborhood icon in the Beverly Oaks subdivision. “Every time she is out with her chain, people stop to take a picture,” said Randy.

The Chihuahua, named after the Mexican state Chihuahua where it was first noticed, is thought to have originated in Mexico in the mid 19th century. These high energy dogs need a lot of playtime and thrive on love and attention; so, it is no wonder Alexis is a natural in front of the camera. Chihuahuas make good companions as they have strong bonds with their owners, are quick-witted and are easy to train.

“People don’t believe how well she listens to her commands,” said Randy. Alexis is a very good supervisor when it comes to feeding and caring for the other animals. Randy owns a horse named Sangria, and cares for three other horses and three donkeys.

Alexis does have her moments where she can get sassy when given a command. She will shoot a look similar to a teenager about to roll her eyes, then let out a bark of disapproval.

When it is time for treats, Alexis profusely nudges Randy’s leg, leading him to the treat bowl. Sassy or not sassy, this little “Chihuahua on a Chain” is aways ready for her next adventure.

Randy’s funny sense of humor and oversized silly red hat earn him one of Alexis’ sassy looks.
