Playing with big brother Drew is one of Bella Webster’s favorite activities, along with dance class, art, and going to the gym. While battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) since January of 2009, Bella, who just turned three, has not stopped enjoying life and it shows in her beautiful smiling face.

Despite all the hospital visits, chemo treatments, and surgeries, she has remained amazingly strong. Bella has inspired many people to help fund research for a cure of childhood leukemia. One special event that continues to support a cure for childhood cancer is the annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser.

In 2009, the Webster’s neighbors Jennifer Havercraft and her husband, Greg Miller played an integral part in the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser. They spread the word throughout the community and raised a significant amount of money for this cause. Even brother Drew shaved his head because he knew it would help his sister. This year, they are all hoping to do the same and Drew has been waiting excitedly.

TeamBella was formed by the Webster family this year, and Havercroft and Miller jumped in to be a part of the team. “They are selfless, generous neighbors who wanted to join our team and raise money with us. This year they want to participate on a higher level and Miller is also going to shave his head. We are grateful to have them on the team!” explains Justin Webster, Bella’s dad. Team members include Justin, his wife and Bella’s mom Anne, Drew, Greg, Jennifer, Anne’s father, Pete Linsmeier and Anne’s brother-in-law, Brad Wurfel.

Another generous group supporting Bella is her school, The Goddard School in Castle Rock. They have organized their own mini-shaving event to raise money in her honor. They did this last year and were very successful. “We are very lucky to have the support from her school,” notes Justin.

The St. Balrick’s event began as a challenge between friends in 2000. They volunteered to shave their heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer and family and friends donating money. It quickly grew into the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer research with more than 106,000 volunteers shaving their heads at events in 24 countries and all 50 United States.

Too chicken to shear off those gorgeous locks? If so, come down for some fun and support those who will prove that “bald is a beautiful thing to do.” Or you can join in to help all children struggling with cancer. You can also check out the St. Baldrick’s website at www.stbaldricks.org.

A special note about Bella. She is currently in remission and completing the maintenance phase of her treatment.
