Back-to-back champions

Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) poms squad took home the state’s highest award at the recent Colorado Spirit State Championships – for the second year running.

The annual event was held at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs. The RCHS Jaguars finished the 5A competition with a final score of 96.425, more than three points higher than second place, Cherry Creek High School.

The 2020-2021 state championship was more typical than last year’s event. A full crowd of spectators, family and other teams made the contest lively and memorable.

Speaking about the 18 young women who make up the poms team this year, head coach Christina Leone said, “Coaching this team is a gift, and I cherish the opportunity every day that they trust me to lead them. They make it look easy, and at times that means what they do is under-appreciated. These young women are exemplary athletes and students, they have a work ethic that I know will take all of them far in pursuit of their life goals. Back-to-back 5A State Champs, pretty surreal!”
