An open letter from the Douglas County School Superintendent

February 18, 2011

Dear Douglas County School District
Employees and Families:

I hope you had a good week and are looking forward to a relaxing weekend. I would like to take a minute to update you on two
current events related to our District.

First, Governor Hickenlooper released his budget this week. We have been anticipating and preparing for these significant reductions to K-12, and after reviewing this recent information, we have determined the worst case scenario for which we had been planning is in line with the governor’s proposed budget numbers. More specifically, over the past six weeks we have been reviewing the feedback gathered last year from our many stakeholders and drafting budget reduction scenarios that will balance our 2011-2012 budget, and we have constructed what has become known to us as the “blue budget” and the “black budget.” Both of these budgets and all of the associated details will be fully explained at the March 1, 2011 Board meeting.

Next, as you may remember, the Board passed a resolution on December 7, 2010 accepting the report of the Choice Task Force and referring the recommendations to me and my team for further analysis, input and integration. My team began its work in December, continued research etc. during January, and began our community input phase on February 1, 2011. We will be presenting our final draft to the Board the first week of March.

I would like to encourage you to participate in this process by attending one of our scheduled meetings or providing your thoughts via our website. Our website will continue to be updated as new materials become available.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Celania-Fagen
Superintenden
