A career of protecting and serving

Douglas County Sheriff Office K-9 deputy Scott Kelly stands with his partner, Onyx.

Deputy Scott Kelly always knew what he wanted to do when he grew up: serve in the army and be a police officer. Despite not having any family members serve in either capacity, Scott has accomplished both.

As an infantryman in the United States Army, Scott was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, with the 101st Airborne Division. He served our country in active duty for four years and is proud to be a non-commissioned officer. He explained, “Teaching soldiers was one of the best parts of my job in the military.”

Time away from family while on deployment was the most difficult aspect of his military career. Scott was deployed to Afghanistan in 2012 and 2013 supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

After fulfilling his obligation to the Army, Scott turned to his second life goal. He started with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in early 2018 as a detention specialist. He then moved up through the ranks to patrol, where he was a field training officer and a designated marksman officer.

Scott continues teaching his fellow officers as a less lethal instructor while also working in the K-9 team.

Three-year old Onyx, a Belgian Tervuren, is Scott’s K-9 partner. They have been together since last year, when Scott joined the K-9 unit. Scott and Onyx continue to learn from each other as they strive to be the best team possible. “The better we get at our job, the better we can protect the citizens of this county,” Scott explained.

Douglas County is home to Scott; it always has been. Born and raised in Castle Rock, Scott is a Castle View High School graduate. The Kelly family continues to make it their home. Scott and his wife, Kayla, have a young son, and a daughter due to arrive at the end of the month.

Scott loves to spend time with family and friends in his free time. Keeping it relaxed, he also enjoys cheering on the Broncos and Avalanche, watching and attending games as often as he can. Time outside fishing and waterfowl hunting are also hobbies for Scott. Additionally, he enjoys his saltwater fish tanks and anything history-related.

“Douglas County has always been my home and as a true native, I am blessed to have my dream job protecting and serving this county,” Scott concluded.
