Memorial Day is an important time for all Americans to remember the sacrifices that veterans have made to ensure our freedom. Whether attending a Memorial Day remembrance event, or sending a note to a veteran, take a few minutes to bring to mind these brave men and women. Really stop and think of their contributions to keeping our country safe and strong.

In the Castle Rock area, there are a few events and ceremonies planned to honor veterans. These are open to the public and the community is encouraged to join these special remembrances.

The Colorado Veterans Project (CVP) is hosting a Freedom Fest & Food Drive at the 2019 Memorial Day Run & March on Saturday, May 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This family-friendly event kicks off the Memorial Day weekend with the Memorial Day Run & March, and 5K, 10K, and 30K runs. The festival is held inside the Douglas County Fairgrounds Events Center in Castle Rock and includes a live concert, great vendors, a beer garden, special guests and food trucks parked right outside. This friendly competition collects food and raises funds for Colorado’s homeless veterans.

The festival is free, but the CVP suggests donations of money or non-perishable food items that will be collected at their booth. For more information, visit www.memorialdaymarch.com.

On Monday, May 27, the American Legion Post 1187 is holding two ceremonies. One will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Cedar Hill Cemetery, located at 880 E. Wolfensberger Road in Castle Rock. The other ceremony will start at 11 a.m. at St. Philip in the Field, located at 397 S. Perry Park Road in Sedalia.

Parker will host a Memorial Day Veterans Service of Remembrance on Monday, May 27 starting at 10 a.m. at JS Parker Cemetery, 10375 S. Parker Road in Parker.

Monday, May 27 is the 2019 Memorial Day Observance at Fort Logan National Cemetery. The ceremony will start at 11 a.m., 4400 W. Kenyon Avenue in Denver.
